Comparison

Govarna vs. Vanta for AI governance: an honest comparison.

Vanta is built around certification frameworks like SOC 2 and ISO 42001. Govarna is built around the EU AI Act's actual obligations. These are different jobs — and many teams need both.

The honest one-paragraph answer

If your job this quarter is a SOC 2 report or an ISO certification, Vanta is a strong choice, and Govarna does not do that work. If your job is the EU AI Act specifically — an AI system inventory, role and risk classification per system, Article 50 transparency obligations, AI security questionnaires, and audit-ready evidence packs — that is exactly what Govarna was built for, at published mid-market pricing. Many teams keep Vanta for certifications and add Govarna as the EU AI Act layer.

Decision guide

Three questions that decide it

1. What artifact do you actually owe?

If a buyer or auditor is asking for a SOC 2 report or an ISO certificate, that is certification automation — Vanta’s territory. If they are asking for an AI system inventory, an EU AI Act risk classification, Article 50 transparency disclosures, or answers to an AI security questionnaire, that is the specific job Govarna is built for.

2. Is ISO 42001 the same thing as EU AI Act readiness?

No. ISO 42001 is a voluntary AI management-system standard; the EU AI Act is a regulation with specific obligations that attach to specific systems and roles. The two overlap but do not substitute for each other — certifying a management system does not, by itself, discharge Article 50 duties or classify your systems. Review the relationship with qualified counsel for your situation.

3. Do you have to choose?

Often no. Many mid-market teams keep Vanta for SOC 2 and ISO work and add Govarna as the EU AI Act layer: inventory, role and risk classification, transparency obligations, and AI questionnaire responses. The two address different jobs and are designed to coexist.

When not to choose Govarna

We would rather you buy the right tool. If your immediate need is certification automation — SOC 2, ISO 27001, or ISO 42001 — choose Vanta or a comparable trust management platform; Govarna does not do that work and is not trying to. Likewise, some items on Govarna's roadmap — SSO/SAML sign-in among them — matter to larger organizations and are not shipped yet. We say so on our pricing page rather than listing them as available.

Common questions

Comparison FAQ

Is Govarna a Vanta competitor?

Mostly not. Vanta is a trust management platform built around certification frameworks like SOC 2, ISO 27001, and ISO 42001. Govarna is built around the EU AI Act’s actual obligations — AI system inventory, role and risk classification, Article 50 transparency, and AI security questionnaires. The overlap is limited to Vanta’s AI-specific capabilities, and for that specific job Govarna is the purpose-built option.

Does Govarna replace Vanta?

Not for SOC 2 or ISO 27001 — Govarna does not do certification automation, and if that is your job, keep Vanta. For EU AI Act governance specifically, Govarna can complement Vanta or cover what you might otherwise use Vanta’s AI capabilities for, depending on what your plan includes.

If we get ISO 42001 through Vanta, are we done with the EU AI Act?

ISO 42001 certification and EU AI Act obligations are different things. The standard can support your governance program, but the Act imposes specific duties — such as Article 50 transparency — on specific systems and roles regardless of certification status. Whether your organization meets those duties is a question for your team and qualified legal counsel; Govarna helps you track and evidence the work.

Can we migrate away from Govarna later?

Yes. Your AI inventory, classifications, policies, and evidence export to PDF and JSON at any time. There is no lock-in by design — the export is the same artifact you hand to buyers and auditors.

Is there a free way to try the core feature?

Yes. The free AI security questionnaire drafter at govarna.com/tools/questionnaire requires no signup, and the free EU AI Act deployer assessment takes about three minutes.

Does Govarna support enterprise requirements like SSO?

Not yet. SSO/SAML sign-in and some other enterprise features are on the roadmap and not shipped — we say so on the pricing page rather than listing them as available.
